Saturday saw a game of numbers as the Force took to the court to host the Surrey 89ers, aiming to go from 6 to 7 wins this season. As has been their recent style, Force started slowly and methodically, working the ball around the court and looking for openings in the Surrey defence. While this approach allowed Force to secure some easy looks and scores, the low intensity enabled the 89ers to play their own game. The first quarter ended in a 17-17 deadlock, with both teams trading baskets.
The second quarter continued in much the same fashion, with both teams going punch for punch and seeking an early knockout. Neither side was willing to back down or be overwhelmed. By halftime, Force had managed to edge ahead with a slim 2-point lead, going into the break at 41-39. During halftime, the crowd was treated to a performance by Faded Dance, but the real question lingered: what would be said in the locker rooms?
Whatever message was delivered in the Force locker room, it worked. A higher-paced third quarter began, with Force raining long-range shots—channelling the energy of Storm Darragh—on the 89ers’ basket. Despite this, Surrey remained resilient, continuing to trade baskets. By the end of the third quarter, Force had managed to extend their lead to 6 points, finishing at 66-60.
The fourth quarter saw Force’s intensity reach its peak. They overwhelmed the stubborn 89ers, outscoring their opponents 29-13 in the final period. Exceptional teamwork was on full display, with standout performances from Babalola (27 points), Philipson (17 points), and Blake (11 points). Lomboto and Brown contributed significantly with quality rebounding on both ends of the court.
The game also marked the return of first-year player Allen Vitug and a standout performance by Titas Zydelis, who was named the team’s impact player of the game.
This commanding victory was a fitting end to the first half of the season. Force enter the mid-season break boasting an unbeaten 7-0 record. The team now looks forward to continuing its momentum in the New Year.
